A seminar on the impact of indoor air pollution on human health and the identification of the sources of indoor air pollutants. The effects of controlling versus not controlling indoor environmental quality at the design phase of building construction will be contrasted through several case studies; these examples can be used to stress the importance of sustainability to clients and help select certified low emitting products as a proven method for controlling VOC emissions (volatile organic compounds).

Overview: The Complete Streets Committee is under the umbrella of the Walkable Communities Study Group within Smart Coast. The mission of Smart Coast is to work toward a vision of an economically, environmentally, and socially sustainable Alabama coastal region. We believe that walkable communities will be critical and highly desirable in our more densely populated and energy constricted future. What a complete street is, why they’re desirable, the statistics behind the need, examples of other communities’ policies, and some visual examples utilizing before and after photos of complete streets.

Energy management and cost reduction is a much needed and a compelling sale. Fortunately reliable low cost wireless technology and control products are developing at a rapid rate to assist us. These products are especially applicable for us in dorms, apartments, and hotels - anywhere the owner pays the utility bills.
Feb 09: Home Energy Rating on the Gulf Coast
Speaker: Ron Head, President of Head Heating and Air
Overview: Ron Head was the first Home Energy Rater in South Alabama and has extensive training in High Performance Buildings over the last 10-20 years for both residential and commercial applications. His practical experience of installing cellulose and foam insulation, and sealing and caulking as well as the design and installation of heating and air conditioning systems along the Gulf Coast will make an informative presentation. He'll be able to answer questions from the most basic to the more complex issues related to energy efficiency, comfort, and indoor air quality. His HVAC company (one of the largest in South Alabama) currently oversees and certifies all of Benchmark's Homes to assure compliance to the Energy Star program as well as numerous other projects. "Fortified... for Safer Living" is a program sponsored by the IBHS - Institute for Business and Home Safety. SkyeTec works with this programs as well as others and has resources and personnel equipped to assess various building conditions and provide recommendations on improving energy efficiency and sustainability.
