John Roper, Executive Director

John Roper brings a diversified background to the Executive Director position for USGBC-Alabama. 

John began his career in Law Enforcement where he served in different roles such as Drug Abuse Resistance Education instructor, canine officer, and patrolman.  After 15 years of serving the public, John moved on to become a Field Director for the State of Alabama Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Board.  During this time, John was responsible for over 40 non- profit agencies, as well as running and administrating the Amachi Program (Mentoring Children of Prisoners).  John appeared on numerous television and radio programs speaking on behalf of the organization for the State of Alabama.

In later years, John worked for Volunteers of America Southeast where he served as the Vice President of Sales.  While there, he became heavily involved in all aspects of project management and wore many different hats including:  logistics manager for volunteer-ran warehouses that were storing donations for Hurricane Katrina victims, sales manager for a steel housing plant, and director of development for new home construction and existing home rehabilitation for many homes in Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi.  During the last two years at VOASE, he served as a Project Manager for multiple municipalities within the State of Alabama.

John has an Associate’s Degree in Business and a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from Troy State University.   He is a State of Alabama Licensed Real Estate Agent and also a Level III Teaching Professional in Golf.

John has conducted over 150 fundraising events including celebrity golf tournaments with athletes from the NFL, MLBA, PGA, and NCAA.

John lives in the Montgomery area with his wife, Alicia, and their children, Andy, Lakin, Lauren, and Dylan.

Justinn Overton, Green Workforce Projects Director

Justinn Overton was born in Birmingham and recently graduated from the University of Alabama where she received a B.A. in Environmental Advocacy from New College. At Alabama, she was Director of the Department of Environmental Concerns within the Student Government Association (SGA). During her term in the SGA, she organized various recycling programs and green events. Later, she interned with Hale Empowerment Revitalization Organization (H.E.R.O.) and with Jones Valley Urban Farm, pursuing her interest in sustainable agriculture and water resources.  Justinn is looking forward to helping build a green workforce in Alabama as the newly hired Director of the Building Green Jobs for Alabama project with USGBC-Alabama.

This program is funded 82% with Federal Workforce Investment Act- American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2008 funding made available to the State of Alabama Governor’s Office of Workforce Development and the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs by the U.S. Department of Labor/Employment and Training Administration.
